By the Time I Realized
No one knows how it happened, I hear that the house was empty at the time. The kids and I were relived that no one was hurt. As we sat down on the sidewalk across the street from the blaze the warmth of the fire lapping at our skin, I realized that I would do anything for the kids. Anything.
I turned to my children and they had smiles, innocent smiles. The smiles you might find right inside the gates of Disneyland. The grins that say everything is going to be alright.
I noticed later that the can of gas I store in the shed was missing. The matches on the mantel, gone.
Smiles.
I was too late.
